Experimental autoimmune myasthenia: A model of myasthenia gravis in rats and guinea pigs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Immunization of animals with acetylcholine receptor (AChR) protein from the electric organs of Electrophorus electricus and Torpedo californica induces an autoimmune response to the AChR of mammalian skeletal muscle. Rats and guinea pigs develop experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) after a single inoculation with small quantities of AChR and adjuvant. The indicence and severity of disease appears to depend on the dose of AChR and stability of the emulsion. EAMG is strikingly similar to myasthenia gravis (MG) of man in its clinical picture and its electrophysiological abnormalities. The presence of antibodies to syngeneic rat muscle AChR in the serum of rats with EAMG documents the existence of autoimmunity in the experimental disease. A common immunopathogenesis is suggested for both EAMG and mg.

An investigation of experimental myasthenia gravis.
Guinea-pigs were immunized with antigen prepared from calf thymus and muscle, and from guinea-pig thymus, and rats were immunized with antigen prepared from rat thymus and rat muscle. There was an increased incidence of delayed hypersensitivity and circulating thymus antibodies in the immunized guinea-pigs and an increased incidence of thymitis in the immunized guinea-pigs and rats. However, wh...
متن کاملPassive transfer of experimental autoimmune myasthenia by lymph node cells in inbred guinea pigs
Passive transfer of experimental autoimmune myasthenia (EAM) was performed with lymph node cells from donor guinea pigs immunized with purified acetylcholine receptor (AChR) from Torpedo californica. Recipient animals revealed the same clinical signs and electromyographic patterns as observed in actively challenged animals. These phenomena are parallel to the clinical manifestations of the huma...
متن کاملAssociation of HLA-DQA1*0101/2 and DQB1*0502 with Myasthenia Gravis in Southern Iranian Patients
Background: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder of neuromuscular junction characterized by skeletal muscle weakness and fatigability. Different genes may control the induction and clinical presentation of this disease. Various HLA alleles are reported as predisposing or protective genetic elements in myasthenia gravis. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the probable as...
متن کاملStromal Cell Derived Factor-1 Genetic Variation at Locus 801 in Patients with Myasthenia Gravis
Background: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most common disorder of neuromuscular junction in which autoantibodies develop against nicotinic acetylcholine receptor for unknown reasons. The association of immunomodulator genes with different autoimmune disease has been studied in recent years. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate correlation between a genetic variation in Stromal Ce...
متن کاملO 29: Autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis Introduction, Immunopathogenesis and Classification
Autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a unique disease among all autoimmune disorders in two ways. First, there are a wide range of sub-specialties involved in the diagnosis and management of MG; secondly MG is an autoimmune disorder whose autoimmunity is well established. In this paper I will cover these topics: history and epidemiology of MG followed by a brief overview on physiology of neurom...
